Bit by Bit How P2P Is Freeing the World argues that today's emergent technology is about more than new and cool toys. Jeffrey Tucker, CLO of Liberty.me and Distinguished Fellow of the Foundation for Economic Education, argues that peer-to-peer technology is forging a new and brighter social, economic, and political order.

People tend to look at innovations in isolation. Here is my new e-reader. Here is an app I like. Here is my new mobile device and computer. Even bitcoin is routinely analyzed and explained in terms of its properties as an alternative to national currencies, as if there were no more than that at stake.

But actually there is a historical trajectory at work here, one that we can trace through its logic, implementation, and spread. It’s the same logic that led from the dial phone at the county store, operated by people pulling and plugging in wires, to the wireless smartphone in your pocket that contains the whole store of human knowledge. It’s all about technology in the service of individuation.

Once you understand the driving ethos — voluntarism, creativity, networks, individual initiative — you can see the outlines of a new social structure emerging within our time, an order that defies a century of top-down planning and nation-state restrictionism.

It is coming about not because of political reform. It is not any one person’s creation. It is not happening because a group of elite intellectuals advocated it. The new world is emerging organically, and messily, from the ground up, as an extension of unrelenting creativity and experimentation. In the end, it is emerging out of an anarchist order that no one in particular controls and no one in particular can fully understand.

"The building of universal prosperity is a process that unfolds bit by bit through decentralized decision making and improvements at the margin through trial-and-error. To continue this process, we need understanding, patience, and dreams. Jeffrey Tucker’s book is an excellent guide to all three.” ~ Patrick Byrne, CEO of Overstock.com, from the introduction.

“In Bitcoin’s brief existence Jeffrey Tucker has become one of its leading proponents. In this book we can see exactly why. Many people think of bitcoin as just money, but Mr. Tucker is able to explain, in a way that is easily understandable by all, the tsunami of innovation that bitcoin is about to release upon the world.” ~ Roger Ver, Bitcoin investor, from the Foreword

Bit by Bit How P2P Is Freeing the World edition by Jeffrey Tucker Roger Ver Patrick Byrne Politics Social Sciences eBooks

Absolutely fantastic book by J. Tucker. I've enjoyed all of his, including Bourbon for Breakfast and It's a Jetson's World. Bit by Bit is a little bit more focused onto bitcoin, but does venture on to explore its many application possibilities and the overall Peer-to-Peer structural benefits of decentralized systems. Like all of Jeffrey Tucker's books, his positive outlook is contagious and you get a sense of freedom and possibilities in a world that can often seem so constrained.

Before this book, I never really understood why people are crazy about bitcoin. I was never against it, I just didn't really fully "get it." Well, Jeffrey fills in the gaps and explains the true value behind it. That's really what I needed - to understand why it has value. I definitely recommend this book to everyone and I now do see a future with bitcoin.

Bit by Bit How P2P Is Freeing the World edition by Jeffrey Tucker Roger Ver Patrick Byrne Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

Excellent and enjoyable read introducing some exciting technologies and cultural trends and how they are making the world a freer place.
Technology trumps politics. Well argued, refreshing, inspiring.
Jeffrey weaves together stories of his life along with examples of emergent P2P technology for an enjoyable and informative read. He argues that freedom is a frame of mind, an attitude, and one which is gaining ground all over the globe. The future looks like an interconnected, global, and stateless society.
This is an eye opening book. I have discovered the potential of bitcoin to reshape our economies, the role of the state, the future of the money. It made me think about disrupting new models of business as sharing economy. Very, very inspiring.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book and I do think it's worth the time to read. There is a good breakdown of bitcoin, the blockchain, and other distributed technologies that are indeed enabling freedom. However, the last third of Tucker's book turns into a rather ordinary defense of a free market and a description of all things oppressive in our society. This wouldn't be a problem for me, but P2P technologies are almost never part of Tucker's picture. I think everyone reading this book already sees the value of a free market and we all have certainly experienced the dread of being ticketed (taxed) by a police officer. I feel like the supposed theme of the book vanishes at a certain point and I'm sorry that it did.
Free. What does it mean? Being able to interact directly with other people without an intermediary on mutually agreeable terms is the essence of freedom. The Internet brings more and more people together every year and has nearly gotten to the point that average people will see an advantage in (and start) disintermediating the intermediaries…Uber is a great example. Privacy maintaining money, like conventional cash, is part of this story. Bitcoin users will not be disappointed and will learn how the new Internet money fits in to a larger human to human economy.
Only about 1/3 of the book is strictly about Bitcoin and not about the technical aspects of Bitcoin, so do not buy the book to learn in-depth.
The rest of the book is about the P2P movement/economy as a whole (which Bitcoin is a part of), and some brief explanation of some main figures in the Austrian tradition of economy.

So why still four stars? Quite simply, Bitcoin in itself is not as important as what it represents The P2P movement, which Jeffrey Tucker explains in a very clear, vivid and unapologizing way!
Especially the unapologizing writing style is very refreshing, and because of it, I will start reading more by Jefferey Tucker.

Button line Do not buy the book for the technical side of Bitcoin, but for the grand perspective of the P2P movement written as by the Libertarian equivalent of Charles Emmerson.
